As a matter of fact the young lady that played the lead in it was a friend of mine too. There might be an incident where they would not let me out. He sold scrap. But Jasmine Burchell, who would later become Jasmine Moran, didnt realize how true the fortune-tellers words would be. We discovered that the museum in Flint that got me excited was the least elaborate of the ones that we saw after that. MM: I was amazed by him, I thought he was eloquent and a wonderful person. While I was in college, I went into ROTC. So I volunteered to head the fundraising committee although I have never ever done fundraising before in my life. But then they allowed her not to go on tour and so I came back to America in June of 1953 and then Jasmine was able to come over in October of that year, and then we were married in Tulsa on November 22, 1953. We thought it was a very nice house. And he had to pick me up so that was why he was alone and wet and I didnt know anything about the other man until later. You could walk down this major street and past a big building where they had the fire department. They were going back home to be with their children in their apartment in London. We were a very fortunate family Ill tell you. He said, You are not. Jasmine fell in love, but she wasnt sure if she loved Melvin enough to change her entire life and move to America. Since that time every president of Southwestern Bell which is now AT&T has been one of our board members. As Moran entered the childrens theater at the Jasmine Moran Childrens Museum on Nov. 1, the fiery energy that spurred her whole life was evident despite what she called her wheelie-dealie walker and her tired, painful shuffle. Melvin Moran: Another one of the nurses in that show was another young woman that Jasmine went to school with and her name was Millicent Martin. And I happened to have a nice loud singing voice. Well, I taught myself to read during those years but I was very, very poor with math, dreadful. Challenge your brain, adults and children alike! We went to Flint and checked into this motel and took our children to this museum, which was in the basement of a bank. MM: In the offices of Moran Oil Enterprises and Moran-K Oil in Seminole, Oklahoma, one block off of Main Street. Mrs. Moran and her husband, local oilman and philanthropist Melvin Moran, co-founded Seminoles Jasmine Moran Childrens Museum, and Mrs. Moran researched, planned and funded the towns new no-kill animal shelter. Im going to put you on my committee. And I said, Oh, new blood for you too. Apparently the land was not good there. MM: It continues till this day and every year we have a raffle. And to see things that old still standing was absolutely amazing. Moran, who had undergone heart surgery a month prior, cracked a few pithy comments in the hot toddy English accent she still carries, smiling under a coif of paper-white hair that floated around her face like babys breath. And that was the beginning of our date. And then he left. I dont know what we wouldve done without the dinners and the invitations to meet people that he would invite to his dinners. How the pioneers made it across this country Ill never know. So, we landed in New York and went straight to the Rabbi Kahn in New York who performed the conversion ceremony. He was 18 years old. I had exactly the right number of papers that I would need to fulfill my route, so I would be short one paper. MM: Right. So you had to. Working with volunteers and donors in Seminole and all over the country, they succeeded in bringing a first-class childrens museum to their hometown. In fact we are the only city in Oklahoma outside of Oklahoma City and Tulsa that has a synagogue. He lived through more than one Depression and rose to the top through the economic highs and lows of the last 80 years, filling his life with humor and fun along the way. And we were really struggling during the war years. I would send out 200 copies to 200 companies and people that might send some money. We remained friends over it because Roberts always been very enthusiastic about anything English and historical and stuff like that, so I was right up his alley. MM: We moved to Tulsa in January 1941. You know, you lived literally from hand to mouth. I had won my game and several people were challenging me and I had won several times. And I would agree with Jasmines statement. Because that last name was so close to the. The President said, I have just received a letter from Albert Einstein. The Jasmine Moran family thanks all for your outpouring of love for a one-of-a-kind woman who will live in our hearts forever. So I spent a lot of my very early years of schooling, very early years because we started school at 4 in England, I didnt go to school at 6, I started at 4. Thats the way he described me and I said, What does that mean? And he said, Well, Ive done the best I can with you, but you will do okay in the United States.. We went to some secret bases and then we met Shimon Peres in his office, and we met Yitzhack Rabin in his office, and we met the main officials of Israel.
